Black is cramped. How does White finish him off?

White to move

  1. Well, I spent far too long looking at the first mate I saw ( Q + R ) but it just doesn't work.

    I think its now Rxd7 Kxd7, but the next part doesn't always work ( Bxe6 or Qxe6).

I suspect that over-the-board I would probably play Bxe6 next and see what happens.

    1. My opponent played 21.Rxd7 Kxd7 22.Bxe6 and went on to lose. 22.Nxe6 seems better, but it is difficult to calculate in the few seconds possible in a three minute game.

  2. James,

    After RxB, KxR... try Nxe6!
    threatening NxR and initiating
a king hunt that drives the
monarch to the b column where
    White's Rb6, wins Black's Q
    leading to a straightforward win.
    A couple of variations make
    interesting use of discovered
    and double checks!
